Why I believe in radio

Jon Hargreaves “More than ninety years after the world’s first station was founded, radio is still the most pervasive, accessible, affordable and flexible mass medium available and in some countries the only one,” Jon continues. “While there are only 2 telephone lines for every 100 people in Africa, there are 20 radio receivers per 100 — even in rural areas most households have access to a receiver.”

At last week's Christian Resources Exhibition (CRE) in Esher, Feba staff asked people this question, "What important role do you think radio plays in Christian mission?"

Listen    “Extremely important, one of the most important, because it overcomes so many of the difficulties like reading, etc… and can go into other places where other media can’t go.”

Listen    “I think it can reach the parts that other stations and other medium cannot actually reach. It can be anonymous, it can be there anytime day or night, because it’s being recorded and transmitted, it can be done time and time and time again, it is perhaps the most frequently and easily available form of communication, it is a bit of a no-brainer really.”

Listen    “I think it plays a very important role because it reaches people who perhaps are not able to have the Gospel and in these days of modern communications, especially with the wind-up radios that people can listen to where there is no power. And maybe people who are afraid to listen outside their homes can listen together with their friends. They get in the Gospel message. And as far as I know with Feba they get far more than just the Gospel message, they get ways of how to live and to help themselves and all kinds of other things, advice.”

Listen    “I think it is absolutely fantastic. Because so many people in the 3rd world can’t read and to listen to the radio is imperatively easier than either having books or being able to read the books. And having been brought up on the mission field, I know that for a fact. The radio is such a useful tool and people can also go away and listen to it on their own secretly and get the message.”

Listen    “Radio is vital as a tool for mission. It can get into places where people can’t go, where other things just don’t happen. I am a great fan of using radio for missions.”

Relevant, interesting and interactive, radio can be a powerful tool to help transform communities.
