Radio for peace, not hate
Baraka FM has aired many programmes relating to peace and reconciliation since the breakout of violence. Talk-show programmes have given different guests, including Christian and Muslim religious leaders, the opportunity to talk about different aspects of living in peace. Programmes have included:
- the role of religion in peaceful co-existence
- the role of the church in bringing peace
- human rights and peaceful demonstrations
- education and peace
- inter-marriages bringing understanding between different tribes
Radio is the primary medium people use to get news in Kenya, especially in rural areas with no access to Internet or TV. Some stations have a casual on-air style with popular phone-in programmes for open dialogue, unfortunately at times becoming a hateful tirade. Sheila Maina, Station Manager of Baraka FM, says many people have their ears ‘glued to the radio’ at this time, so it is a huge opportunity to gain new listeners and be salt and light during these dark days. Baraka FM has had considerable experience in conflict resolution, so they are well prepared to tackle difficult issues.
Please pray:
- for Feba and Baraka FM reporters as they cover news events as they happen
- that ethnic tension will be controlled without more bloodshed
- that Feba through Baraka FM will be a powerful voice for peace and reconciliation
