The Chrysolite is a complete sound recording studio in a sturdy, easily transportable suitcase, developed by Feba Radio UK Audio Systems Team. Decades of experience of programme producers, sometimes technically inexperienced, making programmes in remote locations led to the development of a low-cost, portable, user-friendly studio solution.
A number have now been deployed in Africa, Asia and the Middle East for use in community FM stations where quick and cheap set up has been required, remote locations or locations where security has been paramount, training events and in disaster response. A number have been sponsored by churches and individuals in the UK.
In addition to development costs, already covered, each unit costs typically £5,500 to assemble, deliver to location, and provide training for users. In most cases the users can cover very little of this cost and Feba provide them as part of our charitable activity. Each application is scrutinised regarding the ultimate purpose, the viability of the project and skill level of potential staff.
In 2008 the Mark 5 version of the Chrysolite was developed from lessons learned so far. The video above shows Charles Randall, Principal Audio Engineer, explaining the improvements and new features, and more technical information can be found in the attached PDF.
