Though the FM station in Malawi is still awaiting its broadcasting licence, Feba staff are actively preparing for FM programming by training producers for the transition from short wave programming to FM. Feba and its partners are working together to resolve the licensing requirements as soon as possible.
The station is still not on air due to ongoing issues requiring Feba to get a community FM licence, as a result of differences in the way the actual broadcast licence conditions are being interpreted by MACRA, the licensing authority in Malawi. Bob Bartz (Development Director Feba South and Central Africa) and Frik Veldman (National Director Feba South Africa) are collaborating with TWR Malawi on the best way forward to obtain a separate community FM licence.
Feba has been broadcasting on short wave in the heart language of a specific people group in Malawi for over 10 years. Programme Producer/Presenter Amos and Language Coordinator Anton Meyer are reviewing the content creation process to see what should be adjusted in the current work for the short wave programmes to make the new FM programmes. When these programmes are ready, the current plan is to have them aired on the TWR Network in Malawi and once the FM station is licensed and on air, it can carry the TWR Network. Anton and Amos are travelling to Feba South Africa soon for meetings with Frik and Bob to plan how Amos can train future producers in making content for FM use.
The Station Development Manager Buks van der Merwe is currently back in South Africa waiting for his Malawi TEP (Temporary Employment Permit) to be processed. He is unable to live and work in Malawi until his TEP is granted. Buks is making good use of this time for further training and planning for the station to be on air with its own produced content.
