Question: Can Feba and its partners demonstrate the love of Jesus to a Muslim nomadic people in the Horn of Africa parched by drought and threatened by famine?
Answer: Yes it can - and it is! As our partners create life-giving water supplies for their camels, our joint radio broadcasts on herd protection tips and community health guidance help improve the people’s quality of life. In the Horn of Africa, no ‘useful’ rain has fallen for more than two years. The lack of rain means no grass germinating and growing – and no forage for camels. With camels’ milk the sole staple in the people’s diet, the drought worsens to a famine.
Up the creek
Perhaps surprisingly, drinking water is not a problem for the people as some wells continue to provide good water. But the only creek water for the camels in an area of around 600 square miles has become poisonous with high levels of fluoride. Our partners are engaged in a pilot project to dig a deep well. It is anticipated that this will produce enough to water several thousand camels a week. By developing a crucial camel watering area, not only is sustainability restored to the tribes, but the team are accepted as family.
Through dialogue and demonstration, spiritual breakthrough draws closer. With this sustainable lifeline aligned to broadcasts on herd protection tips and community health guidance, we are offering programmes and practicalities that are life-saving and quality-of-life enhancing.
Stories open doors
Further, as our programmes divert thoughts away from the crisis, we offer Bible-related stories that can be memorised, and are welcome - such as the current series on camels! Located in this part of Africa our partners are working in one of the hottest places on earth and in an area hit hardest by the drought. Although some healthy camels have been moved to greener pastures 50 miles away, many animals have already died. But as the only non-governmental partnership working in the area, through the radio, God has opened doors to allow the team to be accepted.
Through the partners’ spirit-led labours the people group have come to listen to the programmes - and a clan leader has come to faith. In such an area of desolation, the team are bringing the love of Jesus closer.
