Continental Consultation

Christian broadcasting body, Africa by Radio, held a Continental Consultation in Johannesburg from 17-19 September.

Its purpose was to discuss a more joined-up approach to the tasks and opportunities of Christian radio in Africa.<--break->

With almost 100 delegates from 14 countries, the consultation provided a platform for connecting and information-sharing.

Plenary sessions included discussions on new media and technology developments in Africa. Fundraising in recessionary times was also a key talking point. Workshops looked at media ethics, and producing programmes for children.

Mark Taylor, Feba’s International Ministry Director, said: “Africa is a large continent and it is important to think strategically. It’s far better to work in partnerships than everyone doing their own thing.

“Local community-based FM has huge potential, and there is a growing movement of opinion towards community radio with a Christian world view.”

New thinking
Mark continued: “Many delegates were exposed to some powerful new ideas in terms of world view, strategic thinking and dealing with regulations against Christianity being discussed on air.

“Also teaching about the differences between secular, animistic and Christian world views and advice on how programmers can take such views into consideration was interesting and useful.”

The successful networking and challenge-sharing consultation closed with hopes of holding another in 2011.

Prayer Points

  • Pray that radio stations and organisations in Africa will increasingly partner with each other and co-operate, rather than compete for the ears of listeners.
  • Pray for new stations to emerge in the war-torn areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone.
  • Pray for new radio opportunities to emerge soon in Zimbabwe
