Feba longs to see practical, social and spiritual change as our programmes educate, raise awareness, inform and entertain. The story of listener Celeste in Mozambique, who has been bed-ridden for over 10 years, tells how radio can be a powerful advocate for life change.
Feba’s broadcasts on the FM station, Radio Muthyana, provided comfort and companionship as Celeste listened from her bed. One day last July she decided to send a text message to the programme presenter explaining her plight, and Feba staff went to visit her village (20 miles from the radio station, traveling over an hour on bumpy, dusty roads).
Change means real change – not just temporary or superficial alterations but complete transformation. Through our broadcasts and follow-up, often through partners on the ground, the love of Christ brings change not only to individuals but pours out into families and communities too. That’s why it’s important to us that the word change be incorporated into the new Feba logo design as the new tagline: “life. change. hope”.
In the case of Celeste, Feba Mozambique staff contacted a nurse from a local public health clinic. She had previously been unaware of Celeste and her condition, and now she visits Celeste for physiotherapy to improve her mobility. Last November, with money raised from Feba’s supporters and partners, Feba Mozambique staff were also able to provide Celeste with a wheelchair. Celeste’s mother and friends can take Celeste out of her hut everyday for some fresh air in the village. What a great example of life transforming change in action in a community.
“I’m happy, very happy because God has helped me,” says Celeste. “I didn’t expect something like this. I’m very happy because Feba has helped me because of the message that I sent. I’ll ask my family to take me out many times. I thank God very much."
Jonathan Frank, who was visiting Feba Mozambique at that time says: “That's a great example of the power of community radio in action. A listener of the station sends a text message to the voice she hears each day...and the result is a chain of events that are life changing. And the people there say how radio makes a difference to their community, because they hear something of God and Jesus through the programmes that Feba puts on Radio Muthyana.”
