Christian broadcasts for 'second-class' women

Living as suppressed and inferior citizens, many women worldwide have little control over their own lives, their social structures or their circumstances.

Christian radio broadcasting by Feba for women is reaching, supporting and helping those regarded as ‘second-class’ citizens.

In regions of the Middle East, Africa and Asia women are regarded as the ‘underclass’. Facing discrimination, illiteracy, poverty, poor health and abuse, Feba programmes uphold the value of women today by sharing culturally appropriate biblical principles.

The programmes show how God values women and that they were fundamental in Jesus’ ministry.

Jesus was quite purposefully going against the chauvinism of his day,” explains Martin Goldsmith, author and lecturer at All Nations Christian College in the UK.

Speaking to women
Feba’s producers use their local knowledge to develop programmes based on the culture and traditions of the area, making some particularly relevant to women and hosting discussions on air with leaders, decision makers and local women.

In Yemen programmes such as Eve Source of Life, cover the issues of honour crimes, female genital circumcision and violence against women. These are aired as a drama with opinions from women and solutions to problems are discussed with experts.

Support from listeners
Discrimination against women is widespread in Kenya, as a patriarchal society where women often have little influence in decisions affecting their lives. Violence pervades the lives of many women, with sexual violence exposing them to HIV.

On Feba’s Mega Breakfast morning show at Baraka FM in Mombasa, a woman shared her story. Raped by her boss when she was 20, she gave up her baby son to his father as she had no means by which to support or care for him. Baraka FM listeners, moved by her story, generously supported her with clothes, money and access to vocational courses.

Women in India today also face unequal status. Feba India programmes, such as Women's Time and Women's Voice, “aim to encourage and boost the morale of women who feel trapped and powerless and lead listeners to a personal relationship with Christ”, says Kenneth Edward, Development Programme Co-ordinator in Bangalore.

The programmes use the examples of female bible characters to help listeners realise that they are valued by God, and to enable them to feel less victimised by society, family or tradition.
